Digital Twins. The power of new tools will change the world of elevators
The power of the new tools will change the world of elevators.

The competition in elevator industry is pushing all stakeholders to adopt.

There are companies, who are struggling through their R&D departments, to bring the idea to production in the shortest possible time. It is a race for survival in a world where "one-man" decisions can change the rules in 100 days.

The costs for research and development handicap the new ideas and make crucial every decision for a new product. The success or not of a product can make the difference between life and death. There is no more place for failure. No understanding.

In this sensitive environment, new tools come into play, in a way that the R&D will never be the same.

Digital Twin. What is it?

"Digital Twin" is ... No, let´s do it another way.

It is better if you see directly how it is implemented by a key player in the elevator industry.

Schindler´s EDEn as a Digital Twin.
Schindler´s implementation of the Digital Twins.

Schindler has saved millions in research costs and the same time increased the quality of its products. Also the available human resources can be used now in other more productive tasks. It took them 2 years to build a very difficult but a very good "mimic" of the physical model which had :

11.000 blocks

1.500 physical signals

60 different system architectures

350 parameters to configure an elevator system

70.000 lines of code

This system is not for one use only. It is used every time that modifications are needed, reducing the costs and saving money. It is absolutely sure that Schindler has built a strong new tool in the battle against time, costs and competitors.

A game changer in the elevator industry.

To my opinion, Digital Twin by MathWorks is a set of tools that will become a game changer for the elevator industry.

However, can the other manufacturers also benefit from such a tool?

For example, we assume that you are a manufacturer of motors, or controllers, or inverters, or safety gears, or ... or ... . Could you use such a tool?

The answer is a positive yes. MathWorks has support centres all over the world. They support companies to adopt these tools, but they do not "run" the tools. The companies themselves must have people who will be trained by MathWorks to run these tools.

I train myself to the products of MathWorks and I am astonished by the possibilities available. What I like most is that the interface of Simulink and Simscape is a visual interface which makes the interaction with the user easier. This means in simple words that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A PROGRAMMER in order to use it. However, it is best used by engineers with a wide background in engineering, in order to get the best results.

Do not forget :

Not adopting to the new processes and the new technologies (and this includes AI), it does not mean that the competitors will follow the same strategy. They will overtake you fast and sooner or later, when you are forced to react, it will make no difference.

Digital Twin. A game changer.
